This article deals with the nekomusume in Japanese mythology

The Nekomusume is a creature found in Japanese mythology. Unlike its modern counterpart, the catgirl, nekomusume often had more feline traits than human and could be considered more of a kemono than its modern form. In some cases, it was said that they were cats playing pranks that would switch from cat to human form and would eventually become stuck in-between.[1], while in others, they would be human females whose anger was similar to that of an agitated cat, and would take on the features of said animal.[2] At some point these traits were deemphasized, creating the modern catgirl.
